Travel Day -> Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a landlocked state in the South Central region of the United States. It borders Texas to the south and west, Kansas to the north, Missouri to the northeast, Arkansas to the east, New Mexico to the west, and Colorado to the northwest.

Nickname: 'The Sooner State'

In 1889, when the U.S. government had planned to open approximately 2 million acres of land for settlement, many people entered the land before the land’s run designated time. These people were dubbed “sooners.” In 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th American state. The next year the University of Oklahoma’s football team took “Sooners” as its nickname. The expression “sooners” was then embraced as a nickname for the entire state. It is interesting to note here that on April 22, a pistol shot started the land run.

The land runs brought homesteaders from Japan, China, England, Mexico, Canada and France to Oklahoma? Thus the state has a population originating from a wide range of geographies and ethnicities.

The Oklahoma State Flag features a sky-blue background with a central pictorial emblem. The central emblem is comprised of a brown circle which is representative of an Osage Nation buffalo-skin shield with seven eagle feathers hanging off of the bottom. Inside of the shield is a Native American Peace Pipe and an olive branch, which is a European symbol of peace. The two symbols are positioned to form a diagonal cross, representing peace across cultures. Six golden-brown crosses are positioned on the shield. The crosses represent stars in Native American cultures, which symbolize high hopes. The blue background is the same color used on the background of the Choctaw Nation flag that was flown by Native American soldiers during the civil war. Underneath the emblem is the word OKLAHOMA in bold white text.

Pioneer Woman is a bronze statue of a young, sun-bonneted pioneer mother, protectively leading her son by the hand, striding confidently, head held high—a young woman of sturdy beauty and dignity whose eyes are fixed on the far southwestern horizon. Courage, determination, and humility are in her face. A bible is in her hand.
